ADOPTION„MONTH
WHEREAS, there are approximately 400,000 children in the foster care system in the United States;
approximately 130,000 of whom are waiting for families to adopt them; and
WHEREAS, in Butte County there are approximately 540 children and youth in foster care in Butte County;
approximately 55 of whom are waiting for families to adopt them; and
WHEREAS, the average length of time a child spends in foster care in the United States is over 3 years; and
WHEREAS, for many children in foster care, the wait for loving families in which they are nurtured, comforted,
and protected seems endless; and
WHEREAS, every day loving and nurturing families are strengthened and expanded when committed and dedicated
individuals make an important difference in the life of a child through adoption; and
WHEREAS, National Adoption Month is one month out of the year designated to increase public awareness of the
needs of children waiting for permanent homes, as well as the enduring and valuable contribution of adoptive parents; and
WHEREAS, November has been designated as National Adoption Month and is declared so by presidential
proclamation each year; and
WHEREAS, National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to find permanent, loving families for children in
the foster care system.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State
of California, hereby declare the month of November 2014 as Adoption Month in Butte County; recognize that every
child should have a permanent and loving family; and encourage all citizens to consider adoption during the month of
November and throughout the year.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 4th day of November 2014 by the following
vote:
