RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING
BUTTE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE VOLUNTEERS
WHEREAS, April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month and the Butte County Sheriff's Office would like
to recognize the hundreds of volunteers who have dedicated thousands of hours to this Office and the community; and
WHEREAS, the STARS program has 75 active members who do an exceptional job as the "eyes and ears" of the
Sheriff's Office. Since its inception in 1993, STARS personnel have volunteered over 735,000 hours to the Sheriff's
Office, other law enforcement agencies, and to the citizens of Butte County; and
WHEREAS, the Butte County Sheriff's Reserve Deputies have spent countless hours working as extra help
Deputy Sheriffs on patrol, investigations, special events, in the courts and jail. The 31 Reserve Deputies have made
important contributions to the furtherance of the goals and mission of the Butte County Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, the Butte County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Unit founded in 1961, boasts 27 volunteers
who donate approximately 8,000 hours per year. The Search and Rescue Unit assists law enforcement with rescues,
searches for lost or missing persons, body recovery, public evacuations during disasters, and much more. In 2014, Search
and Rescue volunteers found, rescued or searched for 38 people; and
WHEREAS, the Butte County Communications Reserve consists of 14 personnel who last year alone dedicated
over 1,000 hours of service. The Communications Reserve provide additional communications for the Sheriff's Office,
CAL Fire and Butte County Fire by providing support during fires, search & rescue operations and other emergencies; and
WHEREAS, the Sheriff's Posse was founded in 1941 with the mission of promoting the pioneering spirit of our
forefathers by providing community outreach in numerous horse-related events and activities in Butte County. The 29
members of the Butte County Sheriff's Mounted Posse volunteer for search and rescue missions, natural disasters, floods,
fires and other emergencies and provide training facilities for Sheriff's staff, other county-wide law enforcement agencies
and Cal Fire; and
WHEREAS, the four Chaplains of the Butte County Sheriff's Office Chaplaincy Corps have donated 450+ hours
in 2014 and thousands of volunteer hours since 2000. The Chaplains assist deputy sheriffs as needed, represent the Butte
County Sheriff s Office at law enforcement funerals, provide assistance and support to search and rescue operations,
provide grief support after a death and provide support to victims of crime.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes the importance of
the Butte County Sheriff's Office volunteers and the positive impact they have both at the Butte County Sheriff's Office
and in the community.
