Resolution Recognizing April 2015 as
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
WHEREAS, Sexual Assault Awareness Month calls attention to the fact that sexual violence is
widespread and impacts every community member of Butte County; and
WHEREAS, Rape, sexual violence, and sexual harassment impact our community, and statistics show
1 in 5 adult women and 1 in 71 adult men will be raped at some point in their lives, and
WHEREAS, Child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that young people
experience heightened rates of sexual violence, and youth ages 12-17 are 2.5 times as likely to be victims of
rape or other forms of sexual violence; and
WHEREAS, On university and college campuses, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men are sexually
assaulted during their time in college; and
WHEREAS, We must work together to educate our community about sexual violence prevention,
supporting survivors, and speaking out against harmful attitudes and actions; and
WHEREAS, With leadership and dedication, we can be successful in preventing sexual violence in
Butte County by increasing education, awareness, and community involvement; and
WHEREAS, For the past 41 years Rape Crisis Intervention & Prevention has led the way in Butte
County in addressing sexual violence by providing free 24-hour crisis line services to victims, survivors and
their significant others; responding to emergency calls; counseling; offering on-going support and comfort to
those impacted by sexual violence during medical exams and criminal proceedings; and empowering those
impacted by sexual violence to chart their own course for healing; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors strongly supports
the efforts of Rape Crisis Intervention & Prevention. The Board does herby recognize April as Sexual Assault
Awareness Month and encourages all to engage in public and private efforts to prevent sexual violence by
increasing education, awareness, and community involvement.

following votes:
