In the United States an officer is killed in the line of duty every 58 hours; and WHEREAS, in 2014 thirteen (13) California Peace Officers died in the line-of-duty,this is up from 8 deaths the prior year. Nationally, 117 officers died while protecting their communities. The thirteen California officers were memorialized on Monday May 4th in Sacramento and all 117 will be memorialized on May 15th in Washington D.C. These memorial ceremonies are a time to remember our indebtedness to the brave and dedicated Peace Officers who accept a job that is difficult and dangerous; and WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect and remembrance to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and a show of our support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are flown on personal cars and patrol cars during Police Week; and WHEREAS, in a four-year time span, the Butte County Sheriff's Office lost three deputies in the line-of duty, Deputy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Hunter and Lieutenant Estes in 2001. Also killed in the line of duty were Deputy Constable Minor in 1934 and Deputy Brown Jr in 1959. Today at 10:30, the Sheriff's Office will host a public wreath laying ceremony in front of the Sheriff's Office to remember our five fallen brothers. NOW, THEREFORE, 1,tE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 15th as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 10-16, 2015, as Police Week in Butte County. The Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 87-726 directing the flag be flown at half-staff on all County buildings on Peace Officers' Memorial Day which falls on a Friday.
