In July of 1989,John opted to leave the jail and move to patrol by accepting the position of Deputy Sheriff. Whereas, in February of 1993 due to his excellent performance and demonstrated abilities in the field, Deputy Kuhn was promoted to the position of Patrol Sergeant, a position he would hold for 12 years. As a sergeant, Kuhn was assigned initially to patrol where he gained valuable experience that lead to a successful assignment in investigations. During his time to major crimes, Sergeant Kuhn was instrumental in identifying and apprehending a violent subject that had committed several home invasion robberies that targeted elderly citizens. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 37 years for these crimes; and Whereas, Sergeant Kuhn was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2005 and ably served in the position of Lieutenant overseeing various bureaus throughout his career to include patrol, major crime investigations, courts, civil, hiring and backgrounds, employee training, internal affairs, records, administration and was assigned the role of Chief Deputy Coroner; and Whereas, during his career, Lt. Kuhn has been involved in numerous homicide and violent crimes investigations in which his hard work and tenacity lead to case closures and suspects in custody. Lt. Kuhn was actively involved in many critical incidents and has been an integral part of the incident management team for several major wild-land fires; and Whereas, Lieutenant Kuhn's personnel file is thick with letters of appreciation from citizens who recognize John's efforts to go the extra mile for people. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors on its own behalf, and on behalf of the residents of the County of Butte express their deep appreciation for the unselfish dedication and devotion given by Lieutenant John Kuhn during his career with the Butte County Sheriff's Office.
