HomeMy WebLinkAbout16-067 (le /,,1 toj1',0,ihi,61e,00,4 ,If/.401epw,Oxqi,4 ;140 /,6,145,4 rzi),,P(fi Resolution No. 16-067 RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 15,2016,AS"PEACE OFFICER'S MEMORIAL DAY" AND THE WEEK OF MAY 15-21 AS"POLICE WEEK" WHEREAS, in 1962, the members of Congress signed a joint resolution recognizing May 15th each year as "Peace Officers' Memorial Day" and the week in which May 15th falls as "Police Week" to honor law enforcement officers killed in the line-of-duty. In the United States,three officers are killed weekly in the line of duty; and WHEREAS,in 2015 four(4)California Peace Officers died in the line-of-duty,this is down from thirteen(13)deaths the prior year. Nationally, 123 officers died while protecting their communities. The four California officers were memorialized on Monday May 2nd in Sacramento and all 123 will be memorialized on May 12th in Washington D.C. These memorial ceremonies are a time to remember our indebtedness to the brave and dedicated Peace Officers who accept a job that is difficult and dangerous; and WHEREAS, as a symbol of respect and remembrance to those who have laid down their lives in the line of duty and a show of our support to law enforcement officers working to protect our communities, blue ribbons are flown on personal cars and patrol cars during Police Week; and WHEREAS,in a four-year time span,the Butte County Sheriff's Office lost three deputies in the line-of duty, Deputy Jennings in 1997 and Deputy Hunter and Lieutenant Estes in 2001. Also killed in the line of duty were Deputy Constable Minor in 1934 and Deputy Brown Jr in 1959. Yesterday, the Sheriff's Office hosted a public wreath laying ceremony in front of the Sheriff's Office to remember our five fallen brothers. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims May 15th as Peace Officers' Memorial Day and the week of May 15-21, 2016, as Police Week in Butte County. The Butte County Board of Supervisors recognizes public law 87-726 directing the flag be flown at half-staff on all County buildings on Peace Officers' Memorial Day which fails on a Sunday.
