RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITiON OF
LORAIINE GOMEZ
UPON RETIREMENT FROM THE BUTTE COUNTY INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT
WHEREAS, Loraine Gomez, Senior .Administrative Assistant with the Information Systems Department in Butte
County, has retired as of December 30, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Loraine began her Butte County career in the Behavioral Health Department as an Administrative
Assistant III in February 1999. During her time in this position she performed the duties of a communications liaison; and
WHEREAS,in her capacity as a communications liaison,Loraine often found herself dragging phone cables through
attic spaces of office buildings, crawling under desks to repair telephone connections, issuing pagers, managing voicemail
requests as well as procurement and management of telephone assets; and
WHEREAS, in light of her exceptional technical prowess and superb customer service skills, Loraine was hired by
the Information Systems Department in December 1999 as an Administrative Assistant to perform the duties of
communications counselor for wireless communications products throughout the County;.. and
WHEREAS, one of Loraine's first tasks was to assist the department in weathering the great Y2K, Millennium Bing,
panic at the turn of the century; and
WHEREAS, in 20101 Loraine distinguishedherself as the subject matter expert for pager technology as part of a
challenging, but ultimately successful, countywide replacement of pagers; and
WHEREAS, in order to facilitate County business communications, Loraine routinely worked with
telecommunications providers such as Pacific Bell, Metrocall, Nextel, Cingular Wireless, Pacific West, AT&T Wireless,
Verizon, MCP,,Sprint and Spok; ultimately surviving`the passing' of several of these companies; and
WHEREAS, Loraine managed the development and printing of the oft requested County Centrex Phone Directory,
a.k.a. 'The County Phone Book' which contained thousands of POTS numbers; a product which enabled telephone
communications in the County for many years, but has now become a casualty of the digital age. Many staff are still
saddened by its demise; and
WHEREAS, in 2004 Loraine handed off her communications duties and moved her desk to the front office to
assume the duties of executive assistant; and
WHEREAS, in the executive assistant role Loraine was instrumental in the professional handling of tens of millions
of dollars in business transactions required for the successful accomplishment of the mission of Information Systems.
These activities could sometimes be likened to herding cats and included; accounts payable processing, time tracking
validation,staff payroll operations,CalCard payment processing,contracts handling, procurement requisitions,and phone
bill processing; and
WHEREAS, amidst all of these activities Loraine still took time to smile as she guided wayward public members to
the correct County offices, to grin as she reminded managers that subordinate staff performance evaluations were still
due, to whistle off-key while she handled mail, and most important of all, to blow up countless balloons as an
accompaniment to the many birthday announcements she had prepared for office staff over the years; and
WHEREAS, no one can replace the bright, cheerful and optimistic light of love that Loraine has brought to
Information Systems over the past 16 years;
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Board,on its own behalf and on behalf of the citizens of Butte County,
extends its appreciation to Loraine Gomez for her dedication and contributions to successful communications
management and a multitude of administrative services provided in support of the mission of the Information Systems
department.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this loth day of January 2017 by the following
vote:
