RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 10”—16t”AS SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK
WHEREAS, suicide is a major public health issue that requires vigilant attention and preventative action with an
average of 45 deaths by suicide a year recorded in Butte County between 2009 and 2011; and
WHEREAS, each death by suicide directly impacts numerous family members, friend's, loved ones, and by
extension the entire community; and
WHEREAS, Butte County Behavioral Health is committed to raising awareness, providing education and training
on suicide prevention, and reducing stigma; and
WHEREAS,the County of Butte is committed to ensuring that those in need have access to services by healthcare
providers trained in best practices to reduce suicide risk, and to reducing the stigma associated with using behavioral
health treatment or losing a lovedone to suicide; and
WHEREAS, in the most recent year available, 2016, 1,130 calls were made from Butte County to the National
Suicide Prevention Lifeline for assistance; and
WHEREAS, no single suicide prevention effort wild be sufficient or appropriate for all populations or communities;
all are asked to join together and take a stand to help those who are contemplating suicide; and
WHEREAS, September 101" through 16`h is recognized across the United States as Suicide Prevention Week and
provides the opportunity to educate oneself about warning signs and how best to help those most in need.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors do hereby recognize that the week of
September 10th through 161h, 2017, be declared "SUICIDE PREVENTION!WEEK"throughout Butte County.
