RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION OF FRANCISCO"PANCHO" ZARATE
UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE COUNTY OF BUTTE
WHEREAS, Francisco "Pancho" Zarate is retiring from his position as Chief Deputy district Attorney for Butte
County on December 30, 2017 after 29 years in the District Attorney's Office; and
WHEREAS, Pancho worked throughout his childhood picking fruit to help support his migrant farm worker family
and Jn the lumber mills to work his way through Chico State, eventually earning his law degree from the University of
California, Davis, Law School; and.
WHEREAS,though he workedthe first seven years of his legal career in private civil law and public defender work,
he found his true calling as a prosecutor in the Butte County D.A.'s Office on March 8, 1088; and
WHEREAS,as a prosecutor,he tried every type of case ranging from low level misdemeanors to serious child abuse
and molest cases all the way to the most complex homicides during his distinguished career; and
WHEREAS, he became Chief Deputy District Attorney on April 3, 1995 and has been second in command of the
D.A.'s Office since that time; and
WHEREAS, the local judges' respect for his abilities is well-known; and even though he was in a management
position, he still appeared in court often and handled the most difficult of high profile cases; and
WHEREAS, his reputation in the legal community and the courts is one of outstanding, integrity, professionalism,
grace, and charm; and his wonderful sense of humor has made him a wide circle of friends; and
WHEREAS, his love of baseball caused him to create the annual (Butte County District Attorney Memorial Softball
Tournament which has raised tens of thousands of dollars for law enforcement academy scholarships and search-and-
rescue efforts in the naimes of our fallen Sheriff's heroes—Deputies Randy Jennings, Bill Hunter, and Lt. Larry Estes; and
WHEREAS, he is a member and past president of Oroville Sunrise Rotary and the Knights of Columbus; and he
served as a member of the Board of Directors of the California District Attorney's Association for three years; and
WHEREAS, Pancho is married to Sara and they have three children — Gil, Rachel, and Cavin — and four
grandchildren,who wild now have grandpa at all their games and plays.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby recognizes and thanks
Francisco "Pancho" Zarate for his many years of service to the County of Butte and its citizens and wishes him well upon
his retirement.
