Resolution No. 18-002
RESOLUTION CONTINUING THE PROCLAMATION OF LOCAL EMERGENCY_CHEROKEE AND LA PORTE FIRES
WHEREAS, on October 8, 2017, wild fires called Cherokee and LaPorte began in and around the County of Butte;
and
WHEREAS, the Cherokee and LaPorte Fires burned more than 14 thousand) acres of land, destroyed multiple
structures in Butte County, including homes, and caused the evacuation of residents and damage to roads and other
critical infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, on October 9, 2017, Butte County Chief Administrative Officer Paul Hahn declared a Local Emergency
in Butte County,which declaration was ratified by the Board of Supervisors on October 10, 2017; and
WHEREAS, on October 9, 2017, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. issued an emergency proclamation for Butte
County due to the effects of the fires; and
WHEREAS, together the Cherokee and LaPorte Fires destroyed an estimated 42 homes, 4 commercial buildings
and 50 additional structures, and as a result created an enormous amount of debris; and
WHEREAS, some of the ash in the burned structures resulting from the Cherokee and LaPorte Fires contains
hazardous material,which has created a health emergency and poses a substantial present and potential hazard to human
health and safety and to the environment unless it is addressed and managed; and
WHEREAS, on October 181h, 2017 the local Health Officer declared a local health emergency to exist in Butte
County due to the debris resulting from the Cherokee and LaPorte Fires, which was initially ratified by the Board of
Supervisors on October 24, 2017.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Declaration of Local Emergency in Butte County due to the Cherokee
and LaPorte Fires shall be deemed to continue to exist until its termination.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 9th day of January, 2018, by the following
vote:.
