Resolution No. 18-137 RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER 9 THROUGH 15 AS SUICIDE PREVENTION WEEK WHEREAS,suicide is a major public health issue that requires vigilant attention and preventative action; and WHEREAS, between 2009 and 2016,there was an average of 41 deaths per year by suicide in Butte County,and each death by suicide directly impacts numerous family members, friends, loved ones, and by extension the entire community; and WHEREAS, Butte County Behavioral Health is committed to raising awareness, providing education and training on suicide prevention, and reducing stigma; and WHEREAS, the County of Butte is committed to ensuring that those in need have access to services by healthcare providers trained in best practices to reduce suicide risk, and to reducing the stigma associated with using behavioral health treatment or losing a loved one to suicide; and WHEREAS, from January 2017 to Juine 2018, 1,839 calls were made from Butte County to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for assistance; and WHEREAS, no single suicide prevention effort will be sufficient or appropriate for all populations or communities, and all are asked to join together and take a stand to help those who are contemplating suicide; and WHEREAS,September 9 through 15 is recognized across the United States as Suicide P'reventio'n Week and provides the opportunity to educate oneself about warning signs and how best to help those most in need. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors hereby recognizes the week of September 9 through 15, 2018 as Suicide Prevention Week throughout Butte County.As members of the Board of Supervisors,we also call upon our community to commit to increasing awareness and understanding of mental health, the steps our residents can take to protect their mental health, and the need for appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental health conditions.
