RESOLUTION IN HONOR OF SUPERIVSOR MAUREEN KIRK
WHEREAS, Supervisor Maureen Kirk was born in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from the University of
Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene; and
WHEREAS, Supervisor Kirk and her husband, Larry Kirk, moved to Chico in 1951, where she worked as a Dental
Hygienist for 25 years while her husband worked as a professor at California State University, Chico, in the Department of
Chemistry and Biochemistry. She and her husband chose to raise their son Brian in Chico because they believed that Butte
County is a special place to work and live; and
WHEREAS, Supervisor Kirk first began her service to the citizens of Butte County in 1998 as a Councilmember on
the Chico City Council. Supervisor Kirk continued to serve the City of Chico as a Councilmember until December 2006,
acting as Mayor from 2002 to 2004, and Vice Mayor from 2000 to 2002, and again from 2004 to 2006; and
WHEREAS, Supervisor Kirk was elected to the Butte County Board of Supervisors in 2006, and began serving as
the District B Supervisor on January 8, 2007, and has faithfully served as a County Board of Supervisors member for the
last 12 years. Supervisor Kirk has served as the Vice Chair of the Butte County Board of Supervisors for eight consecutive
years,from 2011 through 2018; and
WHEREAS, since moving to Butte County in 1981, Supervisor Kirk has served her community in numerous ways;
as a founding member of the Boys and Girls Club in Chico; as a Health and Safety Officer for the Chico Unified PTA; as a
board member of the Little Chico Creek Educational Consortium and Streaminders; and,as a co-coordinator of the "Heads
Up" helmet program; and
WHEREAS, throughout her public service on both the Chico City Council and the Butte County Board of
Supervisors, Supervisor Kirk has served on numerous boards, committees, and commissions, including but not limited to
her tenure on the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission, Butte County First 5 Children and Families Commission, Butte
County Behavioral Health Board, and the Butte County Association of Governments; and
WHEREAS,Supervisor Kirk has been and remains a dedicated supporter of the Butte County Libraries,a proponent
of a fiscally conservative budget, and through policy adopted by the Butte County Board of Supervisors has safeguarded
Butte County's water resources and valuable agricultural land; and
WHEREAS,Supervisor Kirk is a wife to Larry,a mother to her son Brian and her daughter-in-law Brittany,Grandma
to Gallen and Bowen, and a friend to all.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors, on its own behalf and on behalf
of the residents of Butte County, wish to recognize Supervisor Maureen Dirk upon her retirement for her dedication and
service to the people of Butte County.
