RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING CHIEF DARREN READ UPON HIS RETIREMENT
FROM THE BUTTE COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT
WHEREAS, On January 11, 2019, Darren Read retired with 32 years of service as the Butte Unit Chief, and Butte
County Fire Chief, City of Gridley Fire Chief, Biggs Fire Chief, and Town of Paradise Fire Chief; and
WHEREAS, Darren started his CAL FIRE career as a seasonal Firefighter I in June 1987 working at the Cohasset and
Harts Mill Fire Stations in the Butte Unit; and
WHEREAS, in July 1990, Darren promoted to Fire Apparatus Engineer in the Riverside Unit in their local
government program for the next 7 years; and
WHEREAS, in 1997 Darren accepted a permanent position as a Fire Captain at the Fenner Canyon Conservation
Camp in San Bernardino Unit where he supervised a 17-person Inmate Fire Crew. In June of 1998 he transferred to the
Washington Ridge California Youth Authority, where he again managed and supervised another 17-person Ward Fire
Crew; and
WHEREAS, in February of 2000, Darren transferred to the Butte Unit as a Fire Captain/Public Information Officer.
Darren has also been the Unit Grant Coordinator since 2000, bringing in several million dollars in grants to Butte County,
City of Gridley and City of Biggs. In May of 2004, Darren transferred to Fire Prevention and completed POST training to
become a Peace Officer while also filling the duties of Fire Protection Planning/Law Enforcement; and
WHEREAS, in 2008, Darren promoted to Tehama Glenn Unit as a Battalion Chief/Peace Officer/Fire Marshal, and
Fire Protection Planning/Law Enforcement Officer where he reorganized and streamlined the Tehama County Fire
Protection Planning process; and
WHEREAS, on November 1, 2008, Darren transferred back to the Butte Unit as the Training and Safety Bureau
Battalion Chief/Peace Officer. Darren coordinated all the Local, Academy and Region Training Schedules for the Butte
Unit. Darren was the Butte County Training Officer's Association 'Vice President/Treasurer. Darren also chaired the
committee that rewrote the Volunteer Standard Operation Policy Manual as well as chaired the Volunteer Training Cadre;
and
WHEREAS, in November 2013, Darren promoted to Assistant Chief in the Administrative Division. Darren
prepared all the hiring needs for the Unit, streamlined fiscal) processes, and enacted policy and procedures in
administrative matters; and
WHEREAS, on January 2016, Darren promoted to the Butte Unit Chief, Butte County Fire Chief, and Chief of the
Cities of Gridley and Biggs, and Town of Paradise where he provided guidance and leadership to subordinate supervisors
and Unit employees, oversaw all operational and administrative functions within the Butte Unit and ensure Unit
compliance with state/federal laws,and department policy; and
WHEREAS, Darren's distinguished career with CAL FIRE is not all of Darren's accomplishm,ents. BeforeDanen's
career with CAL FIRE, he was a Fire Explorer for the City ofOrmvi||e, Volunteer Firefighter at Kelly Ridge, Reserve, Officer
for the City of Banning Police �epairtment, as well as a Volunteer in Prevention for CAL FIRE. Darren ishighly organized
and driven toaccomplish where hesees aneed; and
WHEREAS, Darren is married for 20 years to his wife Kristine and has two sons: Robert Goodman and Chad Read
both ofwhom are seasonal firefighters and his wife isavolunteer firefighter for the Kelly Ridge Co. G4; and
WHEREAS, Darren will be missed for his work ethic, his sense ofhumor, and as family man that also loved his
career with CAL FIRE and with Butte County Fire Department.
NOW,THEREFORE, BENT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby congratulate Darren on
his 32 years of service to CAL FIRE/Butte County Fire and we wish him well in retirement.
