WHEREAS,, the month of April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), which calls attention to the fact
that sexual violence is widespread and impacts every person in the community;and
WHEREAS, the goal af5AAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how tm
prevent it; and
WHEREAS, rape, sexual harassment, and others forms of sexual violence harm our community, and sta1istics show one
infive women and one inG7men will beraped a1some point \mtheir lives; and
WHEREAS, child sexual abuse prevention must bea priority toconfront the reality that one imsix boys and one inthree
girls will experience sexual assault before age 18;and
WHEREAS, on campuses, one in five women and one in 16 men, are sexually assaulted during their time in college; and
WHEREAS, the theme ofthis year's SAAMcampaign is "IAsk".The campaign informs individuals onhow they can use
their words to stop sexual violence before it happens by promoting safety, respect, and equality; and
WHEREAS, our words shape the world around us. Whether you speak out against locker room talk or he,lp someone
better understand these issues, your voice is powerful and necessary in this conversation; and
WHEREAS, individuals can embrace their voices tmshow their support for survivors, stand uPtovictim blaming, shut
down rape jokes, correct harmful misconceptions, promote everyday consent, and practice healthy communication with kids;
and
WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors join Sexual Assault Advocates and communities across the country in taking action
toprevent sexual violence. April isSexual Assault Awareness Month and each day ofthe year isanopportunity tocreate change
for the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BEKRESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors join Rape Crisis Intervention and
Prevention sexual assault advocates and communities across the country in taking action to prevent sexual violence, and herby
proclaim April 2019 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and April 24, 2019, as Denim Day in California.
