AN ORDINANCE ADD~NG CHAPTER 3F
TO THE BUTTE GOUNTY CODE
RELATIVE TO ACARZNE MITES
The Board of Snpervisors of the County of Butte, State of
Ca3.i~arnia, DO ORDA~N, as ~oiiows:
Section I. There is hereby added to the Butte Cou~.ty Cade
Chapter 3F whi.ch shall read as ~ollows:
Sec. 37-1. TITLE
Thzs chap~er shall be known and may be referred to in
al.]. proceedings as the Butte County Acaxine ~ite Quaranti.ne.
Sec. 37-2. DEFINITTONS
For ~he purpose o~ this chapter, unless the cont~xt
o~therwise r~quires, the ~oZl.owing de~initions apply.
A. Bees: sha~l have ~h~ meaning assigned to i~ by
§29004 a~ ~he Cali~ornia Food and Agricultural Code.
B. Acarine Mite: Acarapis woodi., an i.nter~al parasxtac
mite of th~ honeybee, Apis mellifera.
C. Host and posszble carri.ers: Bee colon~es, packaged
bees and queen bees o~ the species Apis me7.li~era;
comb, used hives, and any o~her appliance used in
associata.on with bees except those ~ree of live be'es
for sEVen days or 7.ong~r immedia~~ly prior ~o entry
znto Butte County.
D. Commissioner: The Agric~ltura]. Commissioner o~ the
County o~ Butte, State o~ California.

Sec. 37-3, PURPOSE
The Board o~ Supervi.sors ~inds that acarine mite is
not known to occu.r in But~e County and i.f establzshed would
negatively a~fect the api.ary industry. To prevent the entry o~
~he acarine mi~e into Butte Caunty, a quaran~ine is established
agains~ acarine mite, its host, and possib].e carxi.ers.
Sec. 37--4. PROHIBITIONS
Except as provided in Section. 37-6, ~he shipment o~
bees ~rom count~es in Cali~ornia into Btttte County is prohibited.
Sec. 37-~5. NOT~FICATION
Persans receiving or bringing shipments o~ bees ~ram
other counti.es i.n Cali~orn~a in~o B~tt~ County sha~I ~mmediately
no~ify ~he Commissioner upon arrival and place the bees in a
location designa~ed by the Commissioner.
Sec.37-6. CERTIFYCAT~ON
A. Shipmen~s of bees ~rom other Counties in Cali.forni,a
may enter in~o Butte Countq provided they a~e accom--
panied by a certificate, Yssued by the origin county
agricultural commissioner, verify~.ng that:
{1) The origin coun~y conducts an annual. survey
~or acarzne mi.te at the level of th~ 1985-~986 Ca1i~-
orn~a s~rvey ~or acara.ne mite and -~hat, based on the
~ates~ survey resu~ts, acarzne mite is not known to
occur in the origa.n county; or
{2) The shipment of honeybees, within thxr~y days
pri.o~r to entry ~nto Bu~~e County, was sampled and
~ound ~ree o~ acarine mite, by collec~zng, dissecting
and examining at least 75 bees from ~ach 100 co~.onies,

~ or i~ the shipmemt cons~s~s of Iess than 100 colanies,
2 a~ least 75 bees have been so examined, EXCEPT
3 (3} 5h~pments o~ honeybees not certified as required
~ above sha~~ be he~d as presc~ibed ~n Sec. 37~5. Such
5 shxpments may be samp~ed bp the commissioner by
S collecting, dissecting, a~d examzn~ng at leas~ 75 bees
7 from each 100 coloni~s, or i~ the shipment consists a~
8 ~ess than 100 colonzes, a~ least 75 bees have been so
9 examined and ~ound ~o be ~ree ~rom acar~ne mite.
1~ Sec. 37-7. DISPOSITION pF INFESTED SH~PMENTS
11 Any shipment o~ bees ~aund ~o be in~ested with acarine
12 mite sha~~ be remoned ~rom this Co~nty within ~8 hours o~ wri~~en
13 notice to the owner or shipper, a~ his or her expense, or be
~4 destroyed under the superv~szon o~ ~he commissioner.
~~ S~c. 37-8. HIVE IDENTIFZCAT~ON
16 Hives which ha~e been sampled as per Sec. 37-6 and
~7 found ~ree from acari~e mxte sha~~ be marked by placing on each
~~ hive a s~icker or other identificatian seal issued by the
~9 znspecting county.
2~ ~ec. 37-9. FE~~
~1 The Board of Supervisors may, by reso].ution set the
~2 ~ees ~or any inspecti.on and destruction of honeybees required
23 purs~zan~ to this Ordinance.
~4 Sec~ion Y~.
25 A~.1. 4rdinances or parts o~ Ordin~.nces or Resolutions in
~~ conf~ic~ her~wi~h are hereby repea7.ed to the extent of such
27 con~lict and no ~ur~her.

Th3.s Ordinance shall ~ake e~fect on the 20~h day o~
f~ovember , 1986, and be~ore the expiration of 15 days
a.~ter its passage, it shall be pub].ished at leas~ once 1A a
newspaper of general circulat~an in ~he Caunty o~ Bu~~e. This
Ordinance sha1.J. remai.n in e~~ect for a period of one year from
the e~fect~.ve date or unta.l. a county survey is conducted which
indicates the County o~ Bu~~e is infes~ed with ~the quaran~zne
pest, acarine mi~te.
