AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 1-17.5 AND 1-17.6 OF CHAPTER 1 ENTITLED "SEAL OF
THE COUNTY OF BUTTE" AND "USE OF THE COUNTY SEAL" OF THE BUTTE COUNTY CODE
The Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte ordains as follows:
Section 1. Section 1-17.5 entitled "Seal of the County of Butte" of Chapter 1 of the Butte County
Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
1-17.5 Seal of the County of Butte
The Seal of the County of Butte shall be the design, form and inscriptions corresponding
substantially with the following representation thereof:
Butte County
Upon adoption of the County Seal by the Board of Supervisors, a description and impression of
the seal shall be filed in the office of the County Clerk.
1-17.6 Use of the county seal
(a) The Seal of the County of Butte is a symbol of the County government and shall not be
used for purposes unrelated to County business. The following uses of the County Seal
by County officials, department heads and employees are approved uses:
(1) County stationery and forms;
(2) County packaging;
(3) County advertising and promotions;
(4) County signs and apparel;
(5) County -created institutional literature;
(6) County transportation and related equipment; and
(7) County buildings, equipment and property.

(b) The County Seal or any reproduction or facsimile of the County Seal shall not be affixed
to any object and/or displayed in any manner not set forth above unless the use has been
approved by the Chief Administrative Officer or the Board of Supervisors.
Requests to use the County Seal in a manner not set forth above shall be submitted in
writing to the County Administrative Officer for approval or disapproval.
(c) County officials, department heads and employees are authorized to use an alternative
design to the County Seal when it best serves the graphic design for any of the uses
above. The alternative design shall correspond substantially with the following
representation thereof:

(d) The Chief Administrative Officer, or his or her designee, may approve modifications to
the County Seal for County advertising and promotions.
Requests to modify the County Seal shall be submitted in writing to the County
Administrative Officer for approval or disapproval.
(e) The Board of Supervisors may also approve the use of the County Seal for any purpose
the use is approved by the Board of Supervisors at a duly noticed and convened meeting
of the Board of Supervisors.
(f) It is a violation of this ordinance for any person to use or allow to be used any
reproduction or facsimile of the County Seal in a manner not set forth in this section or as
approved by the Chief Administrative Officer or Board of Supervisors, or as prohibited
California Elections Code Section 18304.
(g) Violations are subject to the general penalties contained in Section 1-7 of the Butte
County Code and as defined in California Elections Code Section 18304.
Section 3. If any provision of this Ordinance or the application thereof to any person or
circumstances is for any reason held to be invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, such

provision shall be deemed severable, and the invalidity thereof shall not affect the remaining
provisions or other applications of the Ordinance which can be given effect without the invalid
provision or application thereof.
Section 4. This Ordinance shall take effect thirty (30) days after the date of its passage. The
Clerk of the Board will publish he Ordinance codified in this Chapter as required by law.

Seal of the County of Butte
The new Seal includes a blue border with the words Butte County, California surrounding an illustrative
scene showcasing the wide open spaces for agriculture, a river running through the middle, the County's
namesake, Buttes, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the distance.
