BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF BUTTE, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
RESOLUTION IN RE MAINTENANCE OF BRIDGES
REQUIRED BY OROVILLE PROTECT _
WHEREAS, the construction of the Oroville Dam will make it necessary
that one or more large bridges of a suspension or other type, costing in excess
of FIVE MILLION DOLLARS ($5 , 000, 000.00) be built as a part of the relocation of
County roads in the County of Butte; and
WHEREAS, the cost of maintaining each of said bridges is presently
estimated in the sum of FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS ($15 , 000.00) annually; a
WHEREAS, the County of Butte does not have the financial resources
to maintain even one of said bridges; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Iver E. Skjeie, 5eniorAttorney of the Department of
Water Resources , has stated to this Board that it is his opinion that the
Department of Water Resources does not have the legal authority to maintain
said bridges; and
WHEREAS,. said bridges are, in the opinion of the Board of Supervisors
of the County of Butte, as much a part of the project as is the dam, powerhouses
and afterbays; and
WHEREAS, it would be unfair and unjust to require the taxpayers of
the County of Butte to pay for the maintenance of said bridges which would, in
effect, be a subsidization to water-users in the southern part of the State of
California, and
WHEREAS , said bridges will be used principally by people residing
outside of the County of Butte because of the fact that the area surrounding the
dam resulting from the construction of said Oroville project will be developed
and used intensively as recreation areas;
NOW, THEREFORE,, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors of the
~', County of Butte, State of California, as Follows:
1. That said Board hereby requests the Department of Water Resources
draft, submit and support legislation that will make it legally possible for said

Department of Water Resources to maintain said bridges as part of the Oroville
project.
2. That the Clerk of this Board forward a certified copy of this
Resolution to Govenor Edmund G. Brown, to William E. Warne, Director of
the Department of Water Resources, and to all other persons directed by the
Chairman of this Board.
The foregoing Resolution was introduced by Supervisor Pryde
who moved its adoption, seconded by Supervisor M~Killop , and said
Resolution was passed this ls~tday of October, 1963, on roll call by the follow-
ing vote:
AYES: Supervisors: Alldredge, Giles, Mcl{illop, Pryde
and Chairman Steinegger
