During this ..time he and his wide have re$ided continuously at their Bean Creek °place. In my opinion, the Bureau of Land b~ianagement is in error 3n recommending that this land be kept ire government hands. There is no good reason given in their report for denying to ,Elmergs family their rightful Indian allotments. Elmer and his.; :father have been grazing cattle on this gxound since 1914. Prior to 1850, when soldiers drove them from the~.r home, members of Elmer~s tribe occupied the site for hundreds, and possibly thousands of years. The fact, as pointed -nut in the report of the Bureau of Land P~~.nagement, that Elmer keeps only a dozen chiclrens is totally irrelev~~.~t. The bureau seems to be looking pretty hard ,for excuses not to grant Elmer his request. Fie is not, to my knowledge, ~.nterested in operating a chicken farm. As for the t~.mber resources, T do not think that they will be commercially profitable for the next fifty years or mare, and Elmer is not looking that far ahead. The valuation of the land mentioned in the report is excessively high. Apiece of ground was. ~u~t bought '~y a resident of Bald F?ock for one hundred dollars an -acre, and this piece of 320 acres not only overlooks the proposed lake, but contains two running streams and irrigable land, To intimate that Elmer is interested in subdividing his remote allotment, $3nus making a handsome profits is also speculating about the far distant future. _i ~i `~- . Ast fvr the need for b~uf~er zones for possible future recreation needs, I think that there are already sufficient for any reasonably concievable needs, 1Vhile I agree that the government had better not give out any more homesteads or mining claims in this area, I don't see that it has the need or the right to' den~.Blmer.!s.`~ust:claim for these Indian A1lotment~ Sincerely, ~ John v`J.
