2 AN ORDINANCE REGULATING PROTUBERANCE ON WHEELS, TIRES OR TRACKS ON
VEEiICLES USING PAVED ~TTGE3WAYS

4 The BOARD OF SUPERVISORS of the COUNTY OF BUTTE, STATE OF
5 CALIFORNIA, do ordain as follows:
6 1. No tire, wheel, sled, track, or other object, on any ve-
7 hicle, machine or implement, upon any County highway which has been
8 paved with asphalt, bitumen, or concrete, shall have on its periphe ,
9 or surface contacting said highway, any block, stud, flange, cleat,
10 ridge, bead, disc, edge, or any other protuberance, or device, that
11 will cause, or have a tendency to cause, damage to the surface of
12 such highway. This Ordinance shall not apply to the following:
13 (a) Tire chains of reasonable size used to prevent ska.d-
14 ding when upon wet surfaces or when upon snow or ice.
15 (b) Pneumatic tires which have embedded therein wire not
16 to exceed .075 inches in diameter and which are so contracted that
17 under no conditions will the percentage of metal in contact with
18 the roadway exceed five (5) percent of the total fire area in con-
19 tact with the roadway, except that during the first 1,000 miles of
20 use or operation of any such tire, the metal in contact with the
21 raodway may exceed five (5) percent of the fire area in contact
22 with the roadway, but shall in no event exceed twenty (20) percent
23 of such area.
2~ (c) Vehicles operated upon unimproved roadways when nec-
25 essary in the construction or repair of highways.
26 (d} Traction engines or tractors when operated under the
27 conditions of a permit first obtained from the Department of Publi
28 Works of the County of Butte.
29 2. ~'he'Director of the Department of Public Works of the
30 County of Butte is hereby authorized to issue permits of exemption
31 from the provisions of this Ordinance; providing that there is con
32 tained and stated in such permit the means to be employed by the

permitee to avoid damage to said paved County highways.
3. The violation of this Ordinance is a misdemeanor.
This Ordinance shall take effect thirty (30) days after the
date of its passage, and before the expiration of fifteen (15) days
after its passage, it shall be published once with the names of the
members voting for and against the same in Oroville Mercury
Register a newspaper published in the County of Butt ,
Mate of California.
The foregoing Ordinance was duly adopted and passed by the
Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of California,
at a regular meeting thereof, held on the 20th day of June, 1960,
upon roll call by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Alldredge, Giles Huggins McKernan and
Chairman Pryde
