COUNTY OF BUTTE, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
RESOLUTION.PROTESTTNG THE PROPOSED ABANDONMENT BY THE
WESTERN PACIFIC RAILROAD COMPANY OF 'II~E CALIAI RNIA
ZEPHYR PASSENGER TRAIN
WHEREAS,. the Western Pacific Railroad Company, a public
utility, has made •application to the Interstate Com.'nerce Commissio
to discontinue the operation of its California. Zephyr passenger
train, otherwise known as trains 17 and 18, between San Francisco
and Salt Lake City; and
WHEREAS, the Interstate Commerce Commission has ordered
that hearings 'be held to hear. protests .regarding the pro pase.d
discontinuance of this train; and
WHEREAS, in the calendar year 1967 and 1968, approximately
8,000 revenue passengers have already. boarded or•departed the
California Zephyr at Oroville;~and
WHEREAS, this patronage demonstrates the need for the
"continued operation of the California Zephyr; and
WHEREAS, the population projections for the State of Calif-
ornia and the. entire United States are such that any reduction in
public transporfatiori would seem untimely; and
WHEREAS, the Divisions of Highways are striving every day
to meet the ever increasing demand of transporting our citizens
on public roads, and are not adequately able to supply the
demand;- and
WHEREAS, the California Zephyr is the only train remaining
that serves Butte County; and "
~^IHEREAS, witl-~ the completion of the key structure of the
California Water program that will provide a recreation area for
the entire State of California and the United States, the results
~of tourism-alone will add to the public use and need of the
California Zephyr, •
NOW, THEREFO RE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BUTTE OOUNTY BOARD

1. That said board does hereby, as.a matter of record,
protest the•proposed'discontinuance by the Western Pacific Rail-
road Company of the California Zephyr passenger train,
2. That said board does hereby urge the Interstate .
Commerce Commission to dezry the company's application for the
discontinuance of the California.Zephyr, and
3. That in the event the application by the company is
denied, said board pledges its. assistance in any efforts to help
the company in seeking ways and means so that continued operation
of the California Zephyrs will be possible in the interest of
serving the public convenience and necessity.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by .the Board of Supervisors of the
County of Butte, State of California, this 2nd day of April,
1968, by the following vote:
