WHEREAS, MATTIE R. LUND served the County of Butte ~or
nearly 47 years3 and
WIIEREASQ during her tenure of office9 she served as
Secretaxy and Treasurer of both tte Calif~rnia County Tax Collector's
Association and the Treasurer's Association, and
WHEREASy MATTTE Ro LUND served as Patriotic Instructor
for the local WomanQS Relie~ Corps for nearly 50 years; for nearly
as many years she was the chairman of the Naturalization Day programso
NOWy THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors
of ~he County of Buttea State of California, as follows:
]., Tha~ said board hereby memoralizes its appreciation
of the meritorious services rendered to the Co~nty of Butte by
MATTIE R. LUND during her Iifetime,
2, That the condolences and heartfelt sympathy of this
board be extend.ed to her sisters, Mrs. M, G. Parker, Mrs. Fred
I, Gilbert and Nlrs, E, R. Higgins, and that the clerk of this board
forward a certified copy of this resolution to them.

Mattie R. Lund was borr` ~ Morgan Valley on February 7, 90; the first chi.ld of ~he
late•Mr. and'Mrs. Ole Bordsen Lund. 'rlhen she was four years o].d, the Lund family moved to
Banner Mine, where Mr. Lund was engaged in gold mining. In i902, the Lnnds moved to Orovllle
and huil t and resided in one of the fis^st hornes in the Veatch tract. .
Miss Lund received her early education in the Oroville schools and 2ater graduated from
"•.the Oakland Polytechnic Business College, followed by special courses at the University of
Southern California.
Her first position was with the local City of Pari.s Department Store as a book-keeper.
! Following this position she was employed by the Oroville Gold l~'Ii.n~.ng Dred ging Company.
In 191~+, she became the first woman to seek and win an elective office in the 5tate
of Cali.fornia; at this time she was elected to the office o£ Butte County Tax Collector.
:`, Four y~ars later the oifiee of Tax Collector was combined *.aith that of Treasurer. :fiss
Lund again became a candidate for this ca:nbined office and raon re-election. She served ~.n
, this capacity until 1961 when she retired, having served the people of Butte County for nearly
~7 ygars. During her tenure of office, she served as Secretary and Treasurer of both the
California County Tax Collector's Association and the Treasurers Association. ~
Miss Lund was an aot~ve member of numerous £raternal, civic and patriotic organizations.
•. She was a me:nber of the First Congregational Church of Orovi.lle and played her part in per-
forming many official duties ~herein. _
In patriotic work, she won the.distine'tion o£ being named Honorary Secretary for the
W. T. Sherman Grand Army of the Republic Post. She was appointed by Governor Rolph to the
Board o~ Directors of the Woman's Relief Corps Home in Santa Clara County from 1933-1941.
As a member of the Ed. T. Sherman 47oman's Relief Corps,Auxii~iary to the Grand Army of thE ~
".. Repub~ic, xnc., she rose through the ranks to become the President of the Department of
' California and h~evada. Continuing in her work, she becatrte affilliated wi.th the national
oxtier and has been serving successfull.y, among other capacities, as the Chairman of the
33ational Scholarship Committee. People of this locality wi11 remember her as Patriotic
Instructor for the iocal Woman's Re3.ief Corps, a post she held lor nearly 50 years.
