Law 90-5/~2, enacted by the 90th Congress October 2, 1968, certain
selected rivers of the nation sha11 be preserved in their free
~la~ring conditions and they and their immediate environments shall
be protected for the benefit and enjoyanent of present and future
generations, and
WHEREAS, the Act also directs that studies and in-
vestigations shall be made to determine additional potentia3. rivers
which might be included within the Wild an d Scenic Rivers System, and
WHEREAS, the Bureau of Land Management has recently
held hearings on this matter and requested comments from interestad
and concerned. agencies and ind~.viduals, and
WHEREAS, the 5acramento River has in e~fect become a
transporting canal for the federal and state water projects; and
WHII2E,AS, because of the flooding and bank eroding
characteristics of the river, many acres of valuable agricultural
lands are lost each year and great damage has resulted to the county
road system; and
WHEREAS, the County of Butte has attempted in the past,
and is presently in the process of acquiring federal funds for banlc
protection works al.ong the Sacramento River; and
WHEREAS, the.National Wi1d and Scenic Rivers Act
defines a free-f}.owing river as one flowing in a natural conaition
without impoundment, diversion, straightening, rip~rapping, or other
modi~ication of the waterway;

RESOLUTION OPPOSIN~ THE DESIGNATION OF THE
SACRAMENTO RIVER AS A WILD RIVER
- NOW, THEREFORE, the Board of Supervisors of the County
of Butte is in opposition to having thafi ~each of the Sacramento
River flowing through Butte County placed in the National Wild
and Scenic Rivexs System,
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of
Supe~visors this 21s .day of March, 1972, by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors, IVladigan, Maxon, IViaKillop, Raynolds and
Chairman Gilman
NOES: None
