Board of Supervisors of the Gounty of Kern, and
WHEREAS, Since the early days o~ our Nation it has been the
continuing policy of the Government to provide for the burial of its
deceased war veterans in National Cemeteries, and
WHEREAS, the U. S, National Cemeteries of the Presidio o~
San Francisco and Fox~ Rosecrans at San Diego and the Golden Gate National
Ceme~ery at San Bruno are completely filled and closed, and
WfiEREAS, the 93rd Congzess did enact ~L 93-43, "National
Cemetery Act of 1973", establishing wi~hin the Vetezans Administration
a National Cemetery System for the internment o£ deceased servicemen
and veterans, and
WHEREAS, there are many si~es within the County of Kern
ideally situated ~or the estabtiishment and perpetua~ion of a National
Cemetery, some of which are already owned by the Government, and
W[iEREAS, the Kern County area is within the geographical center
and embraces the popula~ion center of the state, is serviced by two
major transcontxnental railroads and two major national highways, and
has a modern airport system including an u~tra-modern terminal and
sixteen satellite airfields throughout the county, and
WHEREAS, this area enjoys an equable climate throughout the
year, which proves of great~ benef~t to those families wishzng to visit
the resting places of loved ones at any season, and
WHER~AS, two of the nation's largest milztary installations
(Naval Weapons Center and Edwards Air Force Base) are located within
Kern County.
RESOLUTION REQUESTING ESTASLISHMENT OF NA~IONAL CEMETERY
IN THE COUNTY OF IzERN AND SUPPORTING THE BOARD OF SUPER-
VISORS OF THE COUNTY OF KERN ON TH~zR POSITION THEREON ~
NOW, THEREFORE, B~ I~ RESOLVED by the Board o~ Supervisors of
the County of Butte, State of California, ~hat the President o~ the
United States, Federal and State legis~ators, appropriate committees in
Congress, and other appropriate agenc~es be, and ~hey are hereby urged
to recommend the estabZishment of a National Cemetery in Kern County,
and this Board does hereby ~u~~orize and support ~he efforts of the Kern
County Veterans Affairs Counc~l, Kern County Board of ~rade,
chambers of commerce, civic and fraternal orgariizations, in expediting
this worthwhile pro~ect.
