RESOLUTZON OPPOSTNG THE ~NCLUSION OF THE SACRAMENTO
RZVER IN THE NATIONAL WILD AND SCEN~C RTVER SYSTEM
WHEREAS, un.der ~he Wi.Id and Scenic Rivers Act, ~ublic Law
90-542, enac~ed by the 90th Congress Oc~ober 2, 1968, cer~ain selec~ed
~i.vers o~ ~he nation sha11 be preserved in their free flowir~g con-
d2tions, and
WHEREAS, the Act also d~.rec~s that studies and inves~igations
sha11 be made to dete~mine additional po~en~ial r~.vexs which mi.gh~C be
included within ~he G+Ti1d and Scenyc Ri.vers System, and
WHEREAS, ~he Bureau of Outdaor Recreatian and the U. S.
Corps of Eng~.neers have he~d hearings on thi~s mat~er and requested
commen~s ~rronn interested and concerned agencies and ~individuals, and
WHEREAS, ~Che Sacramento River has in effect become a
transpor~ing canal for the federal and state water projec~s, and
WHEREAS, because of ~he ~looding and bank e~oda.z~.g character-
~.s~ics o~ the ri.ver, many acres o£ valuable agxicu~.~ural lands are
lost each year and great damage has resul~ed to ~he county road
syste~n, and
WHEREAS, ~he County of But~e is presen~ly in the process of
acquiring ~ederal funds far bank ~xotection works alozt.g ~he Sacramento
River, and
WHEREAS, the NationaT. Wi1d and 5cen~c Rivcrs Act defines
a free-flawin.g r~.ver as or~.e flowing ix~. a natural. c di~ion withou~
impoundment, diversion, straxghtening, xip-rapping,or other rriodifi-
cation o~ the waterway.
NOW, THEREFORE, the Board of S~pervisors of the County o~
Butte strongly opposes having the Sacramen-to River~or any part thereof
placed in ~he National Wild and Scenic Rive~s System.
