RESOLUTION DESIGNATING MAY AS "55 NiPH COMPL~ANCE MONTH"
WHEREAS, thousands of lives are being saved every year througllout
the ~Jnited States because of the 55 miie per hour national maximum speed
limit; and •
WHEREAS, hundreds of 3.ives are bei.ng saved each year in California
because of the lower speed limie which has been in effect for more than
thx'ee years; and
SdHEREAS, the reduction in tra~ffic fatalities has been accompanied
by an equivalent drop in traffic accident injury rates; and
Wi~REAS~ the lower average speed on the highways is resulting
in better mileage per gallon, meaning. tihat a significant amount of gasoline
is being conserved; and
WHEREAS, if all motori.sts complied with Che 55 mile per houz
`speed iimit, it is eseimated the annual savings in fuel would amount to
30U ma.llion gallons in Califarnia and 3 billion gallons nationally, and
WHEREAS, the Californi.a Highway Patrol has designated the monCh
of May as 55 mile per hour compliance month; noce therefore be it
RE50LVED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors at a regu2ar
meeCing that the Boaxd hereby endorses and supports the Ma.y CampZiance
Month and urges all motorists to participate voluntari~.y i.n observing
the 55 miZe p~r hour maximum speed limite

State o€ California, this 3rd day of May, 1977 hy the ~ollowing vote:
AYES: Supervisors Lemke, Madigan, Moseley and Winston
