ON MT. SHASTA
WHEREAS, snow skiing, 6o~h alpine {downhi1l) and cross-
country, is a healthy activity enjayed by people of all ages,
providing excellent youth development programs as we37 as being a
true family activ3ty; and
WHEREAS, snow skiino has been a very popular activity
among winter recreation programs offered to the citizens of Northern
California, thousands of sk~ers having been taught in learn-to=sk~
programs; and
WHEREAS, ~n addition to being an excellent outdoor leisure-
time activity for citizens of all ages, skiing has a significant
beneficial economic impact on the north state, particularly in
Siskiyou and Shasta counties, in that i~ creates jobs for skf resort
and ski shop employees and business for shops, motels and restaurants,
thus increasi~g sales and employment;.and
WHEREAS, Mt. Shasta generally is considered the prime ski
area in Nor~hern California, capable of providing excellent recrea-
tional skiing for the north sta~e, inciuding all the coastal and
northern counties, and for Southern Oregon; and
WHEREAS, Ski Shasta Corporation operates a ski report that
needs to be moved from its location above ~imberline because of ex-
treme adverse weather conditions that have destroyed equipment, made
skiing unpleasant and threatens to cause closure of the operation; and
WHEREAS, Ski Shasta Corporation proposes to construct a new
sk3 fac7lity, a portion of which would be located in Sections 25 and
30, Township 4] North, Range 3 West, Mount Diablo Base a~d Meridian; and

t~HEREAS, a 1976 study by a consultant hired by the U.S.
Forest Service recommends the same site; and
WHEREAS, this relocation would provide be~ter quality
skiing for a greater number of skiers (including both dawnhill and
cross-country skiing), would result in lower road r~aintenance costs
for ~he County of Siskiyou and would provide substantial economic
benef9ts to Siskiyou and~Shasta caunties; and
WH~REAS, the U.S. Forest Service now has under consi~eration
a proposed wilderness area on ~he slopes of Mt. Shasta, which ~ncludes
all of Sect~on 30, and which, 7f adopted, wouid prevent the proposed
relacation.
IVOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Butte County Board of
Supervisors, State of Californfa, that the U.S. Forest Service is hereby
urged to remove a portion of Section 30, Township 41 North, Range 3
West, M.D.B.& M., from the boundaries of the proposed wilderness area,
and is requested to assist in and to ex~edite the development of a
quaiity skiing facility in tha~ area which will properly serve the
recreational needs of the many skiers in Northern California.
