HomeMy WebLinkAbout78-120.. . ~ RESOLUTIOV DEALING WITH THE PINE BAP`K BEETLE IN FORESTED LANDS IN BiTTTE COUNTY WHEREAS, serious native insect damage is occurring in many portions of the forested Iands in Butte Count,y; and WfiEREAS, last year's estir!mared mortali~y c~ras approximately 60 million board feet of timber due to the insecrs and dro~ght. If the rrees can be salvaged writhin a short ~ime afrer bein~ a~~acked bq the insects, the wood can be utilized for making lumber and other products_ Not all of these trees can or will be harvested dt~.e to access, parcel size, steep slopes, and time; and WHEREAS, even thovgh the drought is over, these native insects wi11 continue to attack and lcill more trees than normal until an endemic level in their population is reached; and WHEREAS, insect populations are reduced through natural predators, cold temperatures and spring rains. Tree resistance to insect attack is aided by good rainfall and salvaging trees from insect infested areas; and WHEREAS, trees that have been successfully attacked will die and after a time become an unsightly fire hazard. Nothin~; can be done ~a revive these trees. I~TOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by this Board that, private forest landowners and governmental agencies managir~.g public lands need to be encouraged to salvage insect infested timber in order to: {1) reduce the spread of insects; (2) utilize wood material that otherwise would be lost; and (3) reduce the fire hazard created by these dead trees. -2- PASSED AND ADOP~~D by ~he Butte Coun~y Board of Supervisors this ~1~h day of Jul 78, by the following vote: AY~~= Supervisors Lemke, adigan, Moseley, ichter and Chai an Wxnston ~OES: None ABSENT: None NOT VOTING: None . ~ ~ ~..~.~~v ~w~ ~-., / OBERT A.
