Articte I JACKSON TRA~'S Section 1.O1. Descriprion of Trap. The .7ackson trap is an Pffective Coo3. for Med~.t~rranean frui.t flq detection and wi.ll be the trap used under this contract. ~t is mad~ of piastic-coaeed cardboard, is inexpensive, and is easy to shzp or store. The lure is p~.aced an coteon ro~l wicks supported by a wick clip. S.Cickem an an inserr is useci ro capture Elies. Section 1.02 TrimedlurP Trimedlure a.tCracts Meditexranean fr.uit flies. Tt is expensive and shoul~ be handled wzth carR to prevent spil- lage and waste. Liquzd lure may be absorbed by tl~e trap, thus rendexing i~ less efficient. Therefore, extreme care should be Gaken nat to attow any of the lure to come in contacC with the cardboard, preventing contamina~ion is one of the mosti _imporrant factors ~to _he considered in tra~ping o~erativns. This lure is a sex l.ure.-Na insec- ticide is ~sed in Trimedlure. Se~tion 1.03 Labeling Traps must be properly labeled so that county parsonnel can determine exact locati.on o€ the traps, It is imperative thar Che trap iocation number accompeny specimens submitteci to the lab sa that Chese numbers can be easily kraced back ro the exact property where Che fly was trapped. Section 1.04 Stickem and 8aiting Traps. Each time the trap is inspected, ~he stickecn should be checked to assure it is in good condikion to catch f~ies. -1- 5ection 1.06 (cont.) The erimedlure wicks are rebaited at ~-week intervals with 2 cc of t~imed~ure. However, saturaCion may be reached before the enCire 2 cc has been added. Yf this ha~pens, then a small amount shauld be drawn back ta preve~t dripping. ~very 12 weeks, both wick and inser~ are replace~ simultaneT ously. The old inserts and wicKs are discarded by puCr.ing them inside a plastic trash bag. No o1d tiraps, wicks, or trap parts will be kepC in the trapper's vehicle during the day outside ot a closed plastic trash hag. The trash bag shauld not have holes in it. Section 1.Q7 Hosts The selection oE the best Eruz.t ~l.y host at each trap location is an impartant phase o~ an e~fecri~re Frui~ F~y Detection Program. Priarity should be given to the pre.~er- red hast. (For the ~referred ~"IQS~ lisr. see Exhibit A-1). Keep in mind that in ttie detection program, we are attempt- ing to detecC an inFes~ation as soon as possible. There- fore, it l~ehooves each trapper to place hi.s traps in the most likely hosts. We ctassify hosts as Eruieing hosts. Generally, iti is not advisable ta p~aca a trap in a hast without Eruit unless it shows evidence o€ abe~ndant hone~dew. The amaunt of natural food {honeydew) an a nonEruiting host can make t3~aC tree a bet~er trap sitF thaR some frua.ting hosts. Honeydew is a sweetish, clear excretion produced by certain insects such as aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, or white~lies. It is 3 good faoci source for aduit fruit flies. A ftingus calZed sooty moLd lives in the honeydew. Thzs mold turns Cl~e leaves on the tr~e black. 'Che presence of sooty mold is an indication that the.hos~ is i.n£ested with i.nsecte that produce honeydew. The danoer o~ ants removing a fl.y or flies f'rom t~e trap is probably greater where honeydew is faund. Trees having thi.n foliage should be avoided when othec preferred hosts are avai3.abJ.e. This is true, especi.ally during the summer months, as these trees do not produce enough shade. When a~reFerred host does not have su~fici-- enr shade, you might consider pJ.acing the trap in a lesser host or nor~hose clase ~y (not more t~an 25 ~'eeC}. 5ection 1.08 Placement oE Traps in Host The trap shoulci be p~.aced in a host at a paint high enougl~ Ca he out of the reach of childzen or Iivestock (5 to 7 feet hi~h).
