developing area around Ghico that exceed the 45 mg/L as (N03) drinking
water standard; and
WHEREAS, these excessive nitrate concentrations axe indicative
of existing and future widespread ground water qua~ity probl.ems; and
WHEREAS, the County of Butte desires to participate in a
program to define the exten.t of the buildup of nitrates and oCher
pollutants ~.n the Chico area ground water, determine possible existing
and future sources of poll~.tants, develop best managemen~ pracrices
for correction of problems, and deve7.op a program designed Co alleviate
existing and ~utuxe impacts of pollutant discharges; and
WHEREA.S, the State of California Regional WaCer Quality
Control Board provides funds to countzes for Water Quali~y Management
Planning undez Section 208 of Public Law 92-500;
NOW, THEREFORE, ~E IT RESOLVED that it is the in~ention of
Butte County to entez into contract with the S~a~e Regional Water
Control Soard to conduct a 208 nitra~e gro.und water study; and
SE I'T FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Direc~or of Public
Health is authorized to make necessary applications and negotiate
contracts after securing approval of the contracts by the Butte
County Board of Supervisors to conduct the study and to prepare a
Iocal water quality management plan for the Chico area; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Butte County will cooperate
with the City of Chico in the conduct o£ the study and in Che
deve~opment of a local water quality management plan.
