,WH~REAS, Americar~ women have ~layed and cantinue ~o play a crit~ca1

econom~c,`cultc~ral, and socia7 role ~n every sphere of our na~9on's life by
constitu~ing a sign~ficant po r~ion of ~he labor fo rce wark3r~g in and outside
o~ ~he home;
W~{ER~AS, Amer~can women have p1ayed a un~qu~ ro~e throughout our F~is~ory
by providing ~he majority af the nation's volunteer ~abor farce and have b~en
part~cularly imgortar~t ~n th~ es~ab~~shment af ear7y charitable philan~ropic and
cul~ura~ ~nst~tions ~n the coun~ry;
WH£REAS, Amer~can women of every race, ciass, and ethnic backgra.~nd
served as ear7y leaders ~n ~he forefront of every €~ajor ~ragressive soc~a7
change movement, not only to s~cure their own r~gh~ of suffrage and equal
opportunity, but aTso ~n the abolitior~ist movem~nt, ~he emancipat7on movemen~,
the industriaT iabor union movemen~, and ~he modern civ~~ rights movemen~; and
W~{EREAS, despi te these contr~ but~ons, the rol e of Ameri can wor~en in
h~story t~as ~een cons~stent7y over~ooke~ and ~ndervalued 3n the body af
American history;
