CONGRATULATE DR. SALLY K. R1DE, AMERICA'S FIRST FEMALE ASTROATAUi. CN HFR ACHIEVEMENT:9
WfIEREAS, Dr. Sally K. Ride, a native of CaliPornie, was the first female astronaut to be seIected
for e mission by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and was the flight eagineer and
mission specia2ist for the flight of the space shuttle Challenger o~ June 18-2A, 1983; and
WHEREAS, in 1978, Dr. Ride was selected as an astronaut candidate by i~IASA; in August 1979,
she completed a one-year training and evaluation period, making her eligible £or essignment as a mission
specialist on space shuttle flight crews; and
~9HEREAB, since 1983, Dr. Ride has participated in important roles in severel space shuttle
launches; she was thus weIl-prep&red for Yhe chgllenge of the hi5tory-making flight o£ the Challenger,
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Ride was one of the mission sQecialists responsible for the use of the shuEtle'~
remote manipulator system and the deployment of the two commuaications satellites ]aunched by
Challenger; and
WHEREAS, Butte County, being Ehe firsY county in the State of California whose Bonrd of
Supervisors is composed of a majority of women, wishes to recognize the achievements of cvamen.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by ihe Boat'd of SuperVisoes of Bu±te CouM}', th&t the
Board of Supervisors of Butte County takes great pleasure in honoring sad commend'[ng Dr. Se31y K. Ride
on her nurnerous academic and professional accompiishments; and the Butte County Board of Sapervisors
expresses the congratulatiorts of all Butte County rasidents in the historic achievements of
Dr. Sally K. Ride.
