HomeMy WebLinkAbout84-062~~ + ,~, ;~, Boa~D o~ ~uPERV~s'oRs ~~: i :(nN * `'~,, CnUNTY OF BUTTE, STATE CF GALIFQRNIA Reso~ufion No. 84-62 RESOLUTION REGARDING CREATION OF A FREE TRADE AREA BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND ISRAEL FOR OLIVES WHEREAS, the Country of Israel has requested that it be permitted to export olive products to the United States on a duty free basis through the creation of a free trade area between the United States and Israel; and WHEREAS, foreign producers such as those in Israel have significant environmental control and processing advantages over domestic suppliers; and WHEREAS, domestic producers contribute through a marketing order to a merchandising fund for the purpose of increasing consumption, while foreign producers take advantage of this without participation; and WHEREAS, Israeli olives are already sold at prices far below domestic levels even without tariff relief; and WHEREAS, Israeli olives provide no new products to domestic consumers but merely seek to share in an existing business; and IdHEREAS, foreign producers of olive products from countries other than Israel have already gained significant share of the domestic olive market; and WHEREAS, the domestic olive industry, entirely located in the State of California, is not only able to satisfy the domestic demand for its products but, in fact, i$ in a surplus inventory position; and WHEREAS, the County of Butte has 250 olive growers cultivating 2,643 acres in olive production. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that it is the finding of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of California, that granting a free trade area between the United States and Israel for olives and other products will cause grievous harm to olive growers in this county and throughout the State of California. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors expresses its strong opposition to creation of the proposed free trade area and urges all members of the United States Congress to oppose this unwarranted concession to Israel and, more particularly,. asks the United States Senators from California and the United States Representatives from this area to protect the interests of their constituents 6y opposing the creation of the propon~ed free trade zone.
