IN SUPPORT OF FEDERAL FUNDING FOR
THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE EXISTING
AMTRAK NATIONAL RAIL PASSENGER SYSTEM
WHEREAS, President Reagan's fiscal 1986 budget has no
funding for Amtrak, the Intercity Rail Passenger Service; and
WHEREAS, this lack of funding will completely eliminate
rail passenger service throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak provides vital transportation for our
community; and
WHEREAS, the Amtrak system is performing well economically
with revenue to cost ratios that have steadily risen from 48% to
56% in the last four years; and
WHEREAS, the Federal funding fias decreased 24% in the
last four years while the service and equipment have improved dramatically;
and
WHEREAS, the Federal Government routinely provides billions
of dollars in subsidies for the airline and trucking industries
and the automobile as a part of the transportation budget; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak is a vital, necessary part of a balanced
national transportation system; and
WHEREAS, we expect and need continued Amtrak service
for our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County
Board of Supervisors strongly recommends that the Federal budget
for fiscal year 1986 and succeeding years include sufficient funds
to operate and maintain the existing strong Amtrak National Rail
Passenger System.

1985, by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Dolan, Mclntruf, McLaughlin and Chairman k'ulton
NOES: None
ABSENT: Supervisor Wheeler
