STATE OF CALIFORNIA • ~:_ : ~ ~~ i '+ ~ ~'' ' ~ '"" ~~ +, ea Kesolufion No. 87-30 ~ ~ RESOLUTION ENDORSING 5B 120, ESTABLISHING LIMITS ON CONTRIBUTIONS TO CANDIDATES FOR STATE OFFICE WHEREAS, the United States Supreme Court rules in 1975 that it is unconstitutional to limit expenditures for a political campaign; and WHEREAS, as a result of, effective efforts to control the inordinate spending of money in political campaigns must necessarily relate to limiting contributions; and WHEREAS, SB 120 would remedy the anomalous status of campaigns for state offices, by establishing the following per contributor limits on contributions to candidates for state office: 5500 for Assembly campaigns, $1,000 for Senate campaigns, $1,500 for campaigns for statewide constitutional office other than Governor, and $2,500 for campaigns for Governor; and WHEREAS, such contribution limits are necessary to reduce expenditures, the influence of large monetary contributions and elections. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte does hereby memorialize the State Legislature to adopt as soon as possible Senate Bill 120. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be transmitted to the members of the Senate Committee on Elections, with the request that they take all action necessary to effectuate the intent of this resolution.
