RESOLUTION COMMEMORATING THE 75TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE PANAMA-PAQIFIC EXPOSITION
WHEREAS, February 10, 1990, will mark the 75th anniversary of the
Pan-pacific Exposition, which celebrated the completion of the Panama Canal
and the emergence of San Francisco from the ashes of the Great Earthquake and
Fire of 1906; and
WHEREAS, the Pan-Pacific Exposition drew participation from all
sections of the United States and was supported financially by 51 California
counties, including the County of Butte, which passed a resolution on January
10, 1913, urging the State of California to appropriate one million dollars
or as much thereof as may be necessary for the construction and maintenance
of a California Building at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition; and
WHEREAS, three symbols of the Exposition remain today: the Palace
of Fine Arts;, its lagoon, now a busy yacht harbor; and the bare hull of a
small, wooden tugboat, "The Gusty", the latter having been built in 1913 for
use in construction of that harbor; and
WHEREAS, "The Gusty", is considered a symbol, not only of the
Exposition but also San Francisco Bay's once great maritime industry; and
once restored and refitted for seaworthiness, would become a useful theme
piece to stimulate interest among school children and others, in the history
of both the Exposition and of California's ocean shipping and fishing
industries.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the
County of Butte does hereby commemorate the Exposition's Anniversary in 1990.
PASSED AND ADOPTED the 23rd day of January, 1990 by the following
vote:
AYES: Supervisors Mclnturf, Dolan, Vercruse, Fulton and Chairman
McLaughlin
