HomeMy WebLinkAbout92-060WHEREAS, Antanino ~~Nino~~ Calarco, for over 35 years, has
done much to improve the effectiveness and coordination of
community health services. He has worked extensively as an
advocate and spokesperson for community health interests. Working
with schools, law enforcement agencies, public, voluntary and
private social service and health groups his skills in planning,
organizing and administering basic and innovative health education
programs have gained the respect and recognition of local,
statewide, and national groups. Nino has been active in
professional and lay health education, environmental issues,
communicable and chronic disease control and other long-standing
and emerging issues.
WHEREAS, Nino Calarco began his professional career with
Butte County in 1955. His work with volunteers in the Salk vaccine
anti-polio clinics and the promotion of automobile safety belts led
to the 1959 "Young Man of the Year" award by the local Junior
Chamber of Commerce. In 1961, California Parent Teachers
Association awarded him an "Honorary Life Membership" for
leadership in programs to educate parents about child care and
development. Tn 1963, intensive involvement in the Sabin oral
anti-polio vaccine clinics resulted in the Butte-Glenn Medical
Society issuing a special "Testimonial of Sincere Appreciation" for
the counties of Butte and Glenn.
WHEREAS, in 1976, the University of California, Berkeley,
School of Public Health awarded him the distinguished "Ann Wilson
Haynes Award" for his high level of technical competency and
professional leadership. In 1977, he was recognized with a Service
Recognition Award from the American Heart Association far his
involvement in heart disease and hypertension programs. Twice, his
peers elected him to the presidency of the California Conference of
Local Directors of Health Education.- He has been listed in the
American Biographical Institute's "Community Leaders of America"
and the International Institute's {Cambridge, England) "Men of
Achievement".
WHEREAS, Nino helped establish local health-related
support groups, emergency medical care services, hospice programs,
drug counseling and referral services, AIDS education programs and
was recognized by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration for his leadership in the development of community
traffic safety programs.

WHEREAS, soon to retire as Director of Health Education,
Butte County Department of Public Health, Ni.ao Calarea has served
as a worksite safety program coordinator, special projects
coordinator, as an advisor to local mental health services and
community maternal and child health services and was the planner
and director of the County's first local drug counseling and
referral center. His membership in the statewide Environmental
Health Committee of the California Conference of Local Health
Officers is reflective of his wide range of commitments.
WHEREAS, in 1989, he was designated by the California
Medical Association (CMA) as the 1989 recipient of its prestigious
"Award for Distinguished Service". The CMA confers the award on
"...a non-physician for significant contributions to the health and
medical care of the people of California." Further, in 1989 the
Chico News and Review listed Nino Calarco as one of twenty north
Sacramento Valley residents who "defined the decade...." and
"....became symbols of the 1980s."
WHEREAS, as supervisor and educator, Nino Calarco has had
profound impact on his health education staff and other co-workers,
often providing them with support and encouragement to continue
their education and pursue careers in health-related professions.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that this Board, on its
behalf and on behalf of the residents of the County of Butte,
express sincere appreciation for the unselfish dedication and
devotion displayed by Nino Calarco during his 35 plus years with
the County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 9th day of June, 1992 by the
following vote:
