DIRECTOR, LIBRARY, COUNTY OF BUTTE
WHEREAS, Josephine ~+Jo~~ Terry began her career in
libraries as a map library assistant for the American Geographical
Soca.ety in New York.
WHEREAS, upon graduation from Florida State University in
January, 1953 and earning her master's degree in library science in
1955, she became head of the Miami Library largest branch.
WHEREAS, Josephine Terry, leaving Florida, moved to
California and took a position with the Sierra Madre city library;
then her career took her to Carson City, Nevada where she was
employed as a public library consultant.
WHEREAS, Josephine Terry joined the County of Butte as
Director, Butte County Library on October 1, 1968.
WHEREAS, Josephine Terry, during her long career with
Butte County, was part of the consolidation of the Oroville and
Chico libraries into an integrated county system; and survived the
construction of three new library buildings and remodeling of two
others.
WHEREAS, Josephine Terry, by election of her peers,
served as president of the California Library Association in 1983,
one of the largest state library associations. She further was
involved in the formation of the Friends of the Library, an
organization of volunteers who assist in fund raising and staffing
of library branches.
WHEREAS, Josephine Terry, following many years of
performing her duties as Director, Library Services is retiring
July 31, 1992 after twenty four years serving the citizens of Butte
County.
NOW, THEREFORE BE iT RESOLVED, that this Board, on its
behalf and on behalf of the residents of the County of Butte,
express sincere appreciation for the unselfish dedication and
devotion displayed by Josephine ~~Jof~ Terry during her 24 years with
the County.
