President Ronald Reagan proclaiming March as NATIONAL SOCIAL WORK
MONTH; and
WHEREAS, social work provides comprehensive supportive
services including education, vocational training and other
necessary services to assist in the achievement of personal and
financial self-sufficiency for eligible participants; and
WHEREAS; social work provides the front line of defense
in the system of services aimed at protecting children from neglect
and abuse and in protecting the frail elderly and other dependent
adults from neglect, abuse and exploitation; and
WHEREAS, social work requires the worker to possess an
excellent understanding of self, to be proficient in exercising
control over personal feelings and attitudes, and to utilize self
knowledge effectively to develop constructive, productive, nan-
punitive helping relationships with clients; and
WHEREAS, social work requires the performance of
multiple, diverse and unique roles including, but not limited to,
investigator, case manager, advocate, counselor, and nurturer; and
WHEREAS, one hundred social workers, employed by the
Department of Social Welfare in the positions of direct service
social workers, supervisors, managers and administrators, provide
quality in--home support services to more than 2,000 frail and
elderly adults each month, adult protective services to about 50
elderly and dependent adults each month, out-af-home care services
to an average of &44 children .per month who are unable to safely
live in their own homes, family maintenance services to
approximately 321 children per month, emergency response services
to an average of 459 children per month reported to be abused
and/or neglected, education, jab training and placement services to
1,600 public assistance recipients each month to assist with the
attainment of employment, license and supervise appropriately 140
family foster homes per month in the County of Butte; and provide
General Assistance/Food Stamp Employment and Training Services to
approximately 980 adults to assist in attaining employment,
advocacy for SSI benefits, and access to service-providing
agencies; and

WHEREAS, social workers are assisted in the performance
of their duties by a variety of highly skilled clerical and
supervisory staff; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of
Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of California, hereby
declare the month of March 1993, as SOCIAL WORKER MONTH in Butte
County to honor these social workers for their commitment to the
profession of social work, their dedication to the highest moral
and ethical standards, their practice of social work with the
competency of their profession and their regard as their primary
obligation the welfare of the individuals and families served.
PASSED AND ADOPTED on the 23rd day of February 1993 by
the Board of Supervisors by the following vote:
