AS FAMILY READING DAY IN CALIFORNIA
WHEREAS, reading is a valuable ski11 that must be honed
and strengthened, bath at school and at home, as well as
individually and within the family; and
WHEREAS, it is important that citizens of all ages learn
to enjoy reading books of various kinds - books that will
enlighten, inform and open worlds of adventure and knowledge to be
explored;
WHEREAS, by making a commitment to reading excellence, to
improving reading abilities, and to expanding the types of material
they read, citizens will come not only to enjoy books, but also to
benefit from them and celebrate the pleasures they provide; and
WHEREAS, the readers of today are the leaders of
tomorrow, and that is why families must encourage their children to
practice reading and nurture this skill so vital to their future
well-being; and
WHEREAS, in addition to helping people reach their full
potential, reading can provide countless hours of pleasure and
education, whether through the intrigue of a mystery, the humor of
a comedy, the magnificence of a classic novel, or the insight of a
historical account; and
WHEREAS, the California Reading Association Incorporated
will be sponsoring activities in conjunction with their annual
Family Reading Day celebration - a day to promote reading and the
valuable role of family in inspiring youngsters to develop their
reading skills and motivations;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County
Board of Supervisors join other counties in California to proclaim
April 9, 1993 as Family Reading Day and urge all citizens to
participate by sitting down and sharing a book with their children
and explaining to them the importance and joys of reading.

Dear Chairman Houx:
The Butte County Library, Oroville Branr_h and Adult Reading Program
staff wish to extend an invitation to you to join us in a special
day long event to celebrate family reading. Governor Wilson has pro-
claimed April 9, 1993 as Family Reading Day for the State of
California.
An area of the branch will be designated for "Family Reading".
Reading aloud to the public will take place from 10:30 AM to 4:30
PM. Scheduling for readers is at 20 minute intervals for 10 to 15
minutes of reading aloud or sharing the importance and joys of read-
ing. You may bring a favorite book from Name to read, ask us to set
aside a title for yau, or select from a wide variety of titles we
will have available far the event.
We encourage you to bring your family and join us in this important
celebration of reading.
Please call Brenda Cratts 538-7196 before March 23rd ar as soon as
possible to schedule your reading time.
A copy of Governor Wilson's proclamation is enclosed far your
information.
