HomeMy WebLinkAbout93-048RESOLUTION PROCLAIIIIING NATIONAL COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK APRIL 17-241993 WHEREAS, county government has a long and rich history and is one of the oldest forms of local government in America. WHEREAS, during the 1800s and the early part of this century, the primary functions of county government involved the administration of justice, law enforcement, and the building and maintenance of roads. In recent decades, the responsibilities of county government have grown enormously. WHEREAS, the duties of our nation's county governments now range froze the preservation of public safety to environmental protection. Every county' is unique, but most provide such services as directing housing and community development programs; maintaining parks, airports and transit systems; and working to solve area-wide problems such as air and water pollution, solid waste disposal, and drug trafficking. WHEREAS, counties care far America. Far many ill, elderly and low-income Americans, the county is often the only available sources of help in obtaining health care and other social services. Counties not only provide health care, but also promote wellness and health prevention and make their citizens aware of such health hazards as radon. WHEREAS, serving rural, suburban and urban residents, range in size from Loving County, Texas, with 107 residents to Los Angeles County, California, with a population of 9 million. Employing mare than 2 million people, county governments spent mare than $1.32 billion last year to provide services to the public. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby recognizes the leadership, innovation and valuable service provided by our nation's counties and proclaims April 17-24, 1.993 NATIONAL COUNTY GOVERNMENT WEEK.
