HomeMy WebLinkAbout93-063WHEREAS, Resolution 81-32 dated February 10, 1981 established
the Board of Appeals for Handicapped Facilities as provided under
Health and Safety Code 19957.5.
WHEREAS, the terminology applied to individuals with
disabilities is a very significant and sensitive issue. As with
racial and ethnic terms, the choice of words to describe a person
with a disability is overlaid with stereotypes, patronizing
attitudes, and other emotional connotations.
WHEREAS, the Americans with Disabilities Act became enacted on
July 26, ~,gg0. The use of the term "disability" instead of
"handicap" and the term "individual with a disability" instead of
"individual with handicaps" represents an effort by the Congress
(adapted into the Code of Federal Regulations) to make use of up-
to-date currently accepted terminology.
NOW THEREFORE, be it resolved this board shall be renamed
"Board of Appeals for Disabled Access".
