JERRY D. SMITH
WHEREAS, JERRY D. SMITH, a graduate of Oklahoma State
University with advanced degrees in plant science, spent ten years
with the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture on a castor bean project at University of California,
Davis,
WHEREAS, JERRY D. SMITH, since 1965, has been a farm
advisor in Butte County working with growers on field and research
problems involving winter cereals, dry beans, field corn and
alfalfa. Some of his projects involved promoting growing wheat an
raised beds to provide better drainage on heavy soils. This method
is currently used throughout the Sacramento Va11ey and was
instrumental in increasing yields in wet years. He was involved in
testing wheat varieties, which allowed growers to switch from a
rust susceptible variety to a rust resistant variety in just one
year.
WHEREAS, JERRY D. SMITH investigated the use of
fungicides to prevent damping off in dry beans; and screening of
corn varieties far fusarium ear rot. He is the author of the Field
Corn Production Manual far California.
WHEREAS, JERRY D. SMITH has worked aggressively on water
issues and policy for Butte County. He was instrumental in
organizing the first North State Water Tour for state leaders and
the initial organization of the Butte Basin Water Users
Association.
WHEREAS, JERRY D. SMITH is the author of a statewide bean
publication, "Common Dry Bean Production in California". The Bean
Seed Treatment work done by Jerry is still the industry standard.
WHEREAS, JERRY D. SMITH has been a strong supporter in
encouraging and promoting the 4-H program in Butte County and has
been active on many statewide and county committees over his long
tenure in Butte County.
WHEREAS, JERRY D. SMITH, since April 1, 1978, has served
the people of Butte County as county director for the University of
California Cooperative Extension and after 39 years in public
service is retiring to pursue other activities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that this Board, on its
own behalf, and on behalf of the residents of the County of Butte
would like to express their deep appreciation for the unselfish
dedication and devotion given by JERRY D. SMITH during his career
as the University of California Cooperative Extension Farm and Home
Advisor in Butte County.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of
Supervisors on this 27th day of July, 1993 by the following vote:
