Dear County Supervisor:
CALIr-or.~i~ ANTS COU~L1~
In the interest of fostering cross cultural understanding and cooperation, Assemblywoman Gwen
Moore has introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 30 to declare October "Multicultural
Awareness Month." This resolution has passed the Assembly and the Senate Rules Committee
and will be heard on the Senate Floor in August.
The resolution will encourage all people of California to share their cultural heritages through
activities developed and sponsored by arts and education organizations and local communities.
Throughout the month of October we will celebrate the wealth of cultural diversity and honor
the spirit of humanity that is within each of us.
We are in the process of organizing a statewide calendar for October which will list all
multicultural activities. We know that arts organizataons and Iocal agencies are currently
supporting wonderful programming. We encourage you to participate in promoting multicultural
appreciation by sponsoring activities in October. Please communicate this invitation to your
Pazks and Recreation and Human Rights Commissions and let us know if you are interested in
participating. Additionally, you may already have specific activities planned which would
promote the multicultural theme. We would be most appreciative if you would send us a List
of the activities you have planned for the month of October for publication in the calendar.
Information should be mailed to the address below or to Assembly Gwen Moore's office, State
Capitol, Sacramento, CA, 95$1 ~.
Multicultural arts activities are a powerful means of communicating social values, self-esteem,
and a sense of community and commonality. IC is our hope that a "Multicultural Awareness
Month" will not only allow us to appreciate our differences, but also help us to recognize the
contribution that each ethnicity makes to the other.
Should you have questions or suggestions, please contact Maisha Hazzard in Assemblywoman
Gwen Moore's office at 213-292-0505, Amy King at 915-445-8800, or Anita Ahuja at the
California Arts Council at 916-227-2590.
Sincerely,
GWEN MOORE
