HomeMy WebLinkAbout93-165WHEREAS, the abuse of addictive and behavior altering substances has become all too commonplace in today~s society; WHEREAS, substance abuse demeans, degrades, and detracts from human dignity; WHEREAS, substance abuse is detrimental to the physical, mental, moral, and economic well being of all our citizens, and particularly threatening to the young people of our community; WHEREAS, increased awareness and education of the harm caused through the abuse of these substances is necessary and can reverse the trend toward of substance abuse; WHEREAS Red Ribbon Week is only one ofi the many efforts aimed at increasing awareness and educating our citizens as to the insidious impact of substance abuse; WHEREAS, CaliforniansforDrug Free Youth, Inc., sponsored the first statewide Red Ribbon Campaign in 1986, and the National Federation of Parents for Drug-Free Youth, Inc. sponsored the first nationwide campaign in 1988, with the Red Ribbon symbolizing commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle---no use of any illegal drug and no illegal use of tobacco, alcohol, or any other legal drug--and with the goal of the Red Ribbon Campaign being to present a unified and visible commitment toward the creation of a Drug Free America; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors endorses increased awareness and education of citizens regarding the harms that substance abuse causes in our society; BE ZT FIIRTHER RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors congratulates and expresses gratitude for the many public and private agencies, and particularly the young people of our community, who are working to eliminate substance abuse and the inherent harm it causes. BE IT FIIRTHER RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors joins numerous other federal, state, and local government agencies in proclaiming the week of October 23 -31, 1993 as Red Ribbon Week; ~"~'~~""" RESOLIITION PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OCTOBER 23 - 31, 1993 AS RED RIBBON WEEK -2- PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 2bth day of October, 1993, by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Meyer, Dolan, McLaughlin, Thomas and Chair Houx NOEB: None ABSENT: None NOT VOTING: None !
