HomeMy WebLinkAbout94-085 WHEREAS, Butte County recognizes the ecological and economic importance of California's national forest lands; and WHEREAS, California's national forest lands provide a variety of valuable resources including wood, paper and other agricultural products, wildlife habitat, clean water, recreation and aesthetic beauty; and WHEREAS, the current policy debate over management of national forest lands has caused negative environmental and economic impacts; and WHEREAS, California's national forest lands are diverse and unique within this state and compared to other states requiring a more flexible "ecosystem" approach to their management; and WHEREAS, local decision-making authority on national forest lands has been replaced by a top-down bureaucracy managed from Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, areas of California's national forest lands suffer from declining forest health and the possibility of devastating catastrophic wildfires, putting human lives, communities, forest landscapes and wildlife at immediate risk; and WHEREAS, social and economic conditions have unnecessarily deteriorated in rural communities, causing unsustainable pressures on families, business and government services; and WHEREAS, H.R. 4068, The California Forest Ecosystems Health Act (Lehman-Fresno} answers these concerns by providing a local ecosystems framework for managing national forest lands in California; and WHEREAS, this Act would help provide a long-term solution for sustainably managing national forest lands and dependent rural economies. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the County of Butte supports the passage of H.R. 4058, The California Forest Ecosystems Health RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF H.R. 4068 THE CALIFORNIA FOREST ECOSYSTEMS HEALTH ACT BY CONGRESSMAN RICHARD LEHMAN (FRESNO} Act and encourages Congressman Richard Lehman to move his bill forward before the August 12, 1994 summer recess; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this resolution be transmitted to Congressman Lehman, Governor Pete Wilson, and our State and Federal representatives.
