DECEMBER 1, 1994
WHEREAS, the global spread of HIV infection and AIDS
necessitates a worldwide effort to increase communication,
education and preventive action to stop the transmission of HIV and
the spread of AIDS; and
WHEREAS, the World Health Organization has designated December
~. of each year as World AIDS Day, a day to expand and strengthen
the worldwide effort to stop AIDS; and
WHEREAS, the World Health Organization now estimates that 16
million adult and 1 million children are currently infected with
HIV and that over 4 million of them have gone on to develop AIDS;
and
WHEREAS, the American Association of World Health is
encouraging a better understanding of the challenge of HIV and AIDS
nationally as it recognizes that the number of people diagnosed
with HIV and AIDS in the United States continues to increase with
an estimated 1 to 1.5 million Americans currently HIV positive and
over 401,749 AIDS cases reported (as of June 1994); and
WHEREAS, World Aids Day provides an opportunity to focus on
HIV infection and AIDS, caring for people with HTV infection and
AIDS, and learning about AIDS;
WHEREAS, World AIDS Day 1994 "AIDS and Families" will focus on
taking action and expressing the urgent need for all communities
and individuals to realize it is time to face the challenge of
AIDS.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of
Supervisors declares December 1, 1994 as World AIDS Day and urges
all of our citizens to take part in activities and observances
designed to increase awareness and understanding of AIDS as a
global challenge, to take part in AIDS prevention activities and
programs and to j oin the global challenge, to take part in AIDS
prevention activities and programs and to join the global effort to
prevent transmission of HIV and the further spread of AIDS.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 22nd day of November by the Butte
County Board of Supervisors by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Meyer, Dolan, Houma, Thomas and Ghair McLaughlin
