"EMPLOY THE OLDER WORKER WEEK"
WHEREAS, Californians are living longer and healthier lives;
WHEREAS, older workers in California are working Ionger and making major contributions
in the job market; and
WHEREAS, older workers bring with them "people" skills such as courtesy, patience,
helpfulness, and empathy; loyalty and support for company and organizational goals; and commitment
to the work ethic. Their past experiences provide a valuable background to employers. Evidence
shows that it makes good business sense to hire older workers; and
WI~REAS, Californuia's baby boomers, the largest segment of our population, are entering
middle age and by the year 2020, 31 percent of the population will be SS years of age and older; and
WHEREAS, this group of health-wise people, with modern medical advancement to support
them, have a projected life span exceeding all others to date; and
WHEREAS, this large and physically active group will not only change the complexion of
California's work force, but misperceptions about growing older; and
WHEREAS, this growing work force pool will soon be placing increased demands on
available employment opportunities; and
WI~REAS, as times and technology advance, this group must enhance its skills to respond
to developing employment needs, and here in Butte County, California, we have a wide array of
training and employment programs available to help meet that goal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED that the Butte County Board of Supervisors does
hereby proclaim March 12-18, 1995 as Employ the Older Worker Week in Butte County; and urges
Butte County employers to join in supporting the rights, refuting they myths and reflecting on the
contributions of our older workers today and everyday. Further, the Board encourages employers
and community leaders to recruit workers from this pool of candidates to help meet the changing
needs of our workforce.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Butte, State of
California, this 14th day of March, 1995 by the following vote:
