HomeMy WebLinkAbout95-136.. ~~,~_~ ~~'Sc~lUf10i1 l'~~t~. 95-136 RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 1995 AS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, in 1995, 20,000 California women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 5,{)00 will die from the disease. Nationally, breast cancer is the most convnon form of cancer in women. Breast cancer has taken the lives of more than 950,000 women--more than 46,000 in the United States, that is one out of every eight women who will develop breast cancer; and WHEREAS, the death or illness of a woman due to breast cancer affects her family, whether she is a mother, sister, or a daughter, and ultimately affects her eonununity as well; and WHEREAS, research shows that breast cancer mortality could be reduced by at least 30 percent if women Collowed recommended breast cancer screening guidelines. Research also shows that oni_v a very law percentage of women in our area arc getting screening mammograms; and WHEREAS, recommended, life-saving early detection methods include these regular screenings for breast cancer: routine mammography,examination by a physician, and monthly breast self-examination. NOW, THEREFORE, in recognition of the important, early detection practices available for breast cancer, the Butte County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims October 199 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and urges all Butte County women to become aware that thcv_ are at risk, and to discuss a sercening program with their health care providers.
