HomeMy WebLinkAbout96-022~: r ~1~'S[~~llflt~ll _~~0. 96-22 RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 197 THE MOUNTAIN LION INIT[ATIVE WHEREAS, the California Mountain Lion population has increased dramatically since it was granted special protected status in 1990; and WHEREAS, mountain lion sightings around California are now a daily event even in urban counties; and WHEREAS, the only current method of managing the California Mountain Lion is through depredation permits which can be issued only after the offending lion has killed or maimed its victim; and WHEREAS, mountain lions are now regular visitors in foothill suburbs and rural cities; and WHEREAS, lions have eaten over 500,000 wild deer and consumed nearly $2,000,000 in livestock in the last two years; and WHEREAS, the California Mountain Lions' hunting practices are placing the endangered Bighorn Sheep population at serious risk; and WHEREAS, the Department of Fish and Game is a respected agency when it comes to managing animal species within California; and WHEREAS, nearly 50% of Califarnia lands are considered prime mountain lion territory, with lions living in nearly every California county; and WHEREAS, the lion population explosion has placed the safety of people, livestock, and small family pets at serious risk. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors supports Proposition 197, an act which requires the California Department of Fish and Game Commission and the Department of Fish and Game to study the population growth of the California Mountain Lion and create and adapt a management plan which protects the safety of California people, livestock, and family pets; and BE IT FURTFIER RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors commends the California Legislature and the Governor of the State of California for placing this public safety measure on the March 1996 ballot in a fair and bipartisan manner. PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 27th day of February 1996, by the following vote: AYES: Supervisors Meyer, Dolan, Houx, Thomas and Chair McLaughlin.
