RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MARCH 18-22, 1996
AS MEDIATION WEEK
WHEREAS, our society has become increasingly troubled and litigious in recent times and
this has led to domestic, commercial and social disharmony; an increasing need for expensive law
enforcement, courts and support personnel; and high public and private costs; and
WHEREAS, in an effort to alleviate these conditions, restore harmony, improve relations
among citizens and within neighborhoods and families, and relieve the burden of litigations which is
overwhelming our judiciary, many of our citizens have turned to mediation services, with resultant
social and economic benefits; and
WHEREAS, the State of California and the County of Butte are engaged in promoting the
use of mediation and raising public awareness about its merits and have supported the creation and
expansion of alternative dispute resolution programs; and
WHEREAS, the County of Butte has funded mediation services to help our citizens resolve
abroad range of disputes within our communities; paid far, in part, by the filing fees submitted to our
local courts; and
WHEREAS, many dedicated persons throughout our community have volunteered to assist
in the expansion of such mediation services to the benefit of the general public, businesses and
agencies in Butte County; and
WHEREAS, the County of Butte supports such community ef~'orts to resolve disputes
informally, out of court, with reduced private and public expense, and with potential for improving
community harmony and relieving the burden an our courts and law enforcement agencies.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Butte County Board of Supervisors
proclaims the week of March 18-22, 1996, as Mediation Week, and expresses sincere appreciation
to our citizens who are working diligently to assist fellow citizens and businesses in the resolution of
conflict and the settlement of disputes.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Butte County Board of Supervisors this 12th day of
March, 1996, by the following vote:
AYES: Supervisors Meyer, Dolan, Houx, Thomas and Chair McT,aughlin
